Dr Tony Holohan to return to Chief Medical Officer role next week

Ireland’s Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Tony Holohan is to return to his role next week.

Dr. Holohan had stepped away from his role at the start of July for family reasons but is now expected to make a return to his role on Monday. At the time, he said he was stepping back to provide care to his wife who had been diagnosed with terminal blood cancer.

Ireland’s CMO became a well-known figure during the first wave of Covid-19 when he delivered the daily briefings held at the Department of Health. Dr. Ronan Glynn became the acting CMO following Dr. Holohan announcement in early July that he was going on leave.

The news comes the same day as NPHET are meeting to consider the latest developments regarding Covid-19 in Ireland and whether further restrictions are required.
