NPHET recommends the whole of Ireland moves to Level 5 restrictions

The National Public Health Emergency Team has once again made the recommendation to the Irish Government that the entire country should move to Level 5 restrictions for a period of six weeks.

The recommendation comes in the wake of a spike in Covid-19 cases across Ireland in the past week.

NPHET’s advice was sent in a letter to Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly last night. The contents of the letter were to be discussed by Government officials and Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan today.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said that the Irish Government will give “very active consideration” to NPHET’s recommendation.

NPHET made a similar recommendation 2 weeks ago when the daily number of new covid infections was around 300-500 a day. Ireland is now exceeding over 1000 cases a day on a regular basis.

There was a further 1,205 confirmed Covid-19 cases yesterday in Ireland and 3 further deaths. This is on top of the 1,299 new cases reported in Northern Ireland today.
