Autism Assessment Centre was established to provide families across Ireland the opportunity to have a professional assessment of need in a comfortable and welcoming setting. Our dedicated and specialised multi-disciplinary team have over 30-years-experience in the field and will help provide clear, compassionate advice alongside a full HSE-standard assessment report. We offer a person centred, evidence based assessments for children aged 3 to 17.

The Autism Assessment Centre is part of the Servisource Group which has 25 years’ experience in the healthcare industry.

Our specialised multidisciplinary team delivers person-centred, neuroaffirmative assessments for children and young people up to 18 years of age, with services spanning autism, specific learning disabilities, cognitive, speech and language, and occupational therapy assessments.

What services do we provide?

Autism assessment
An Autism assessment is a multi-step process that includes information from a variety of sources. We include background information gathered from documents like a developmental history form, previous assessment reports and information from parents during intake. We also request a written report from school personnel who know the child well. Observation data taken during interactions with the child is included as are any standardized assessment results conducted by our staff. There are two main tools used during a basic ASD assessment, the ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised), the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), and Child/Adolescent/Adult Sensory Profile (CSP/AASP).

Information is collected from different areas of functioning to determine if there are differences in communication and social interaction, as well as evidence of repetitive behaviours and whether these behaviours are consistent with others who have a diagnosis of Autism. The ADI-R is only one component in determining if your child has Autism.

The ADOS-2 is a semi-structured, standardised assessment of communication, social interaction, play/imagination and repetitive behaviours for individuals who have been referred for assessment of Autism. It consists of standard activities that allow the clinicians to observe behaviours that have been identified as important to the diagnosis of Autism according to developmental levels and chronological age. The ADOS-2 is only one component in determining if your child has Autism.

The Sensory Profile is a standardized questionnaire completed by the parent/caregiver of a young child or an Adolescent/Adult being evaluated. The Sensory Profile looks at your child’s ability to process input using their five senses – touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste. Research reports that sensory integration may be associated with an Autism diagnoses. While not all persons with Autism have certain traits around sensory integration, many children who are referred to an assessment of Autism present with a complex profile of sensory needs. We include this evaluation tool to help inform parents about the unique needs of their child.

  • The Sensory Profile is a standardized questionnaire completed by the parent/caregiver of a young child or an Adolescent/Adult being evaluated. Occupational Therapy Assessment

Occupational Therapists help children to participate in their daily meaningful occupations including play and learning, environmental exploration, self-care (e.g., feeding, dressing), and school (e.g., handwriting, self-organisation, P.E.). The purpose of a paediatric occupational therapy assessment is to assist a child to achieve independence across their home, school, and community environments. An assessment will explore the following areas:

  • Fine and gross motor development
  • Play skills
  • Sensory processing
  • Visual perceptual skills in relation to handwriting
  • Executive function skills including planning, organisation, and time management
  • Self-care and functional skills including feeding, toileting, and dressing
Speech and Language Therapy Assessment

Speech and Language Therapists work with individuals who may be experiencing a range of differences in relation to their speech, language and communication skills. Below are just a few examples of individuals who may benefit from a speech and language therapy assessment:

  • Children who are at the pre-verbal stage of language development and are communicating primarily through non-verbal means, for example by taking an adult by the hand to show them what they want or by reaching, pointing or gesturing to what they want.
  • Children who can use a few single words but are delayed in their language development.
  • Children who can combine words together and use phrases, but their overall language development is delayed.
  • Children who have challenges with understanding language used by others, for example they may have issues understanding single words or understanding and following through on instructions given by their parents or teachers.
  • Children who are communicating verbally using words and sentences, but they may have speech errors which can make it challenging for others to understand their speech.
  • Individuals who communicate verbally, but who may have challenges with the social aspects of language, for example they may have differences with having back and forth conversations or maintaining topics in a conversation.
Cognitive Assessment

A cognitive assessment consists of the administration of an individual intelligence test with your child that generally takes an hour to complete. We use the Wechsler family of instruments to assess cognitive skills in our clients.

The Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence, 4th edition (WPPSI-IV) is designed for children ages 2-7; the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, 5th edition (WISC-IV) is for children 6-16; and the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, 4th edition (WAIS-IV) is for persons 16-90. A cognitive assessment is helpful in understanding how your child thinks and processes information which will in turn help to inform the educational decisions you make.

Psycho-Educational Assessment

A psycho-educational assessment is intended to provide valuable information about how your child thinks and learns. It includes two tests which can be done on the same day or separately depending on your schedules. First, we will conduct a cognitive assessment to determine your child’s thinking, reasoning, and processing skills. Next, we will evaluate their academic skills in reading, mathematics, and spelling, as well as written and oral language where indicated. Such an assessment can lead to a diagnosis of a Specific Learning Disability in reading (Dyslexia) and/or maths (Dyscalculia) in children ages 4 to 16 years. Each part of the assessment (cognitive or academic) takes 1.5 hours to complete and will be followed at a later date with a written report and personal feedback session to discuss the results. We highly recommend that you check with your child’s school to confirm they will accept the results and provide intervention prior to booking in the assessment. Home/School visit

Home/School Visit

Here at Autism Assessment Cork, we strive to build a profile of your child that accurately portrays their current level of functioning in order to best accommodate their needs. We try our best to create a play based environment that is friendly to children of all ages but coming to our offices may be stressful for even the most easy-going child. On occasion, it is necessary that our clinical team conduct a home or school visit to get a better understanding of how your child behaves in a more natural setting. Anyone on the team, including parents and teachers, can request a home/school visit as part of the assessment process.

Step By Step Process

Here at Autism Assessment Centre we have a simple easy to follow process that our assessments follow:

  1. Step 1
    1. Parents/Guardians need to fill out a form to gather information on the child’s background and developmental concerns. Both parents/legal guardians must give consent and sign our Terms and Conditions.
  2. Step 2
    1. The information is reviewed by a clinician to ensure the assessment is the right pathway for your child. They might organize a consultation with you to discuss concerns and clarify some information.
  3. Step 3
    1. Clinicians might suggest further assessments in order to gain a complete picture of your child’s needs, but it will be your choice to proceed with these additional assessments or not. These could range from a cognitive assessment, a full Occupational Therapy Assessment, a full Speech & Language Therapy Assessment to a school or home visit.
    2. Services package is agreed and our admin team will book you in for the assessments.
  4. Step 4
    1. We will organise a time with you to complete a standardised parent interview (ADI-R or DISCO). This is a key part of the autism assessment which takes the form of a video call with our clinician that lasts around 2 hours. The clinician will ask you lots of background questions about your child’s development and behaviour. It is important to be as honest and accurate as possible. The more information we have, the more in-depth our assessment can be.
  5. Step 5
    1. We will organise a time with you to come in to our centre to complete a standardised play-based assessment (ADOS-2). This takes the form of a series of structured play episodes which your child will take part in with our clinicians. Normally parents aren’t an active part of this assessment, but you will have the opportunity to watch and we’ll make sure you’re comfortable whilst you wait. This part of the assessment usually could last between 30-45 minutes for children aged 5 and below, and 45-60 minutes for older children.
  6. Step 6
    1. When all assessments have taken place our multi-disciplinary team will work together to create a final assessment report for you. This report will provide full background information and a professional write-up of any assessments that were carried out. It will also contain a diagnosis, if one is deemed to be applicable. The report is written to HSE guidelines and will contain all the information that your local HSE disability services or SENO should require.
  7. Step 7
    1. Once the report is finished we will organise a feedback meeting with you over Teams/Zoom, where our team will explain the report to you in detail, answer any questions you have, and provide you with information, support and guidance for the next steps on your child’s developmental journey.

What is the price of the assessments, how do we pay and does our insurance cover this?

As we offer multiple assessments, we can discuss this with you in the initial phone consultation and give you a full price list according to your needs.

Once the services are agreed upon, we create an invoice for you. Payment can be done in instalments and is made through bank transfer.

If you think your insurance may cover the cost/some of the cost, we advise you to check directly with your insurance. If they request any additional details, we can provide these for you.

Can I access services after the assessments are complete?

Services will vary depending on the outcome of the assessments – our recommendations will be based according to diagnosis. Our reports are to a HSE standard, so any service recommended by the clinical team can be accessed after the report is released. Our clinical team can go into more detail with you, and this will be discussed on the parental feedback session once the report is complete.

My child is 2 years old; can I get an assessment?

Although some children may receive a diagnosis around that age, most clinicians won’t see children for an autism assessment before the age of 3 years. Children develop at different paces and some may be delayed in their development as there are many variables that could impact a child’s social communication development. We need to give some children time to develop first before jumping to an autism assessment.

What is the waiting time for assessments?

Our waiting time can vary, depending on each month. We can inform you of the current wait list on the initial phone consultation. Usually, our waiting time is approximately two months.

If my child has any other conditions/diagnoses, for example – ADHD, will this be picked up through the autism assessments and written in the report?

The assessments can determine an autism diagnosis, but they are not designed to make another diagnosis. Although, if the clinicians feel there is something else going on, for example ADHD, they will write a recommendation to advise that there are signs, and that it should be investigated further.

Can I get access to school supports?

Yes, educational supports are recommended by our clinical team.

About Wynand and GPS

Wynand is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist with both the Psychological Society of Ireland (PSI) and the British Psychological Society (BPS). He is also registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Clinical Psychologist in independent practice. Wynand holds two Master’s degrees: one in Clinical Psychology from the University of the Western Cape and another in Clinical Pastoral Care from the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa.

Over the past decade, Wynand has developed a keen interest in working with children who present with autism and other social communication disorders. He has undergone both National and International specialist training in a range of diagnostic tools, including the Diagnostic Interview for Social and Communication Disorders (DISCO), the Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-R), the Developmental, Dimensional and Diagnostic Interview (3di), and the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule – 2nd Edition (ADOS-2).

Comprehensive Diagnostic Autism Assessments: These assessments include a parental interview (using ADI-R, DISCO, or 3di), a play-based session with ADOS-2, a concise autism report with tailored recommendations, and parental feedback.

The Autism Assessment Centre provided invaluable support during a difficult time. The idea of submitting our child to a clinical assessment for ASD was daunting, but the compassion and empathy that was in abundance in every phone conversation and email made it much easier to face. I found the website online through many searches, mostly focusing on making sure that they could be recognised by the HSE should we receive a positive diagnosis. Overall the process was really easy for me. The team ensured I understood each step and what was next and the timeline around it. It was extremely helpful. The actual team who diagnosed my daughter on the day were also lovely and guided us. On the day, they made my daughter feel comfortable and again we’re clear and upfront about timelines and rationale behind some questions. Overall I couldn’t recommend them more, it made this journey a lot easier for me and my family.

I heard about the Autism Assessment Centre from a friend who had come across the service. I immediately contacted them and they replied within 24 hours. They explained everything to me and advised that the waiting time was approximately 10 to 12 weeks. Once we got our appointment for the assessment, all the forms and documentation were sent to me immediately.
The client form, although very detailed, was also very straight forward and easy to fill out. On the day of the assessment, both assessors that were present were very friendly and approachable. They explained everything to my son and made him feel very at ease. The Assessment Centre contacted us by phone and went through the report and explained the findings. We then received the full report via email and, again, it was very detailed but easy to read and easy to understand. All in all, I would highly recommend the Autism Assessment Centre for their professionalism, their work ethic and the clarity in which they communicate their findings.

Paul’s Story

Myself and my wife got to the point with our son were we felt after getting him therapy and on advice, that our son needed an Autism assessment. We got in contact with a few places and it was overwhelming dealing with most places because we were very new to this and with everything from expenses to hearing words that we didn’t know much about to be honest.

Aisling from Autism Assessment Centre got in touch with us after we left an email and from there on in everything was pretty good and easy.  So Aisling through phone calls arranged for us a date to go to Cork for our son to be assessed. The assessment date we chose was a Saturday and were glad of this as were coming from Dublin.

Before we went to Cork there was a Zoom call with the Psychologist Mary Rizza and she asked questions about our son and in turn we got to ask her everything we wanted to know. After the Zoom call we were quite happy and at ease with everything going forward.

We went to Cork and our son met with Mary Rizza and her team. She was very good with our son who was nervous and in no time he was laughing away with her and at ease. Our son was taking into a room with Mary and she carried out her assessment. Our son was happy coming out and told us everyone is really nice, which was good because driving down in the car he was a little nervous.

We got our assessment results about 8 weeks later and everything was explained to us and going forward our options.

I would honestly highly recommend Autism Assessment Centre to anyone who is in the same situation as us.

Maggie’s Story

Our experience of the Autism Assessment Centre was very good. They were efficient and able provide assessment appointment within 2 months. Administrations staff and coordinators were helpful, informative, and patient. They always followed up to ensure we were clear of each step on the way.

Educational Psychologist Dr. Mary Rizza was very nice, she was gentle, professional and clear, and explained so much to us. She was very good with my daughter (2 years, 8 months at the time). She ensured the assessment was not hard on her, it was gentle and open, yet thorough, professional and observant.

The speech and Language therapist Siobhan was very friendly, informative, and very thorough in her observations and information gathering.

They helped us understand many behaviours and gave clarity to what they were finding. They gave a detailed report and explained everything in it, provided clear recommendations, gave helpful advice and many links to various supports after.

I would definitely recommend the Autism Assessment Centre, they were flexible, professional and helped us get the supports our  daughter needs. Thank you to all the team.

Martina’s Story

I was in search of a Autism centre to do a private assesment for my 15 Yr old daughter in 2023.
I am as a person probably a perfectionist in my own way and wanted the best assesment possible for my daughter. I contacted at least 12 different Autism centres but once I spoke to Rebecca in the Autism Assessment Centre I knew straight away my daughter Hazel would be in safe hands.

From the very start, the assessment went so smoothly. My daughter met the team, and for a girl who can feel anxious and overwhelmed so easily, the team had such an amazing way my daughter. They put her at ease, which is huge. They were so good with my daughter but also very professional from start to finish. The team showed my Husband and I great compassion and also if we needed to talk between sessions they made themselves available for us at short notice.

We received my daughters diagnosis and I visited my G.P of 35 yrs with it. She told me it was an amazing report so meticulous and an outstanding report. Mary and the team got to know my daughter inside out and opened my eyes on issues that were so visible to them as professionals that I did not see. I have developed an understanding of my daughter in so many ways since the assessment and  we have grown closer because of it.

I can not recommend the Autism Assessment Centre highly enough.

They are amazing from start to finish and my family and I will be forever grateful to them for everything. Outstanding centre in every way, best choice.

My family and I travelled from Co Clare. We had been on a HSE waiting list for two years and we found it challenging to find a private service locally. We found the Autism Assessment Centre online. I got a response quite quickly when I was enquiring about making an appointment.

The waiting list to get my son an appointment was very short in comparison to going public. Everyone we spoke with or had any interaction with was very helpful and very informative. I was given updates throughout the process both via email and phone.

The booking process was easy, convenient and fast considering the wait we would have had through the HSE. Phone calls and emails were quickly dealt with and the forms needed to start the process straightforward.
