Covid-19 vaccine is ‘90% effective’ confirms Pfizer/BioNTech

A working coronavirus vaccine finally looks in sight. Following an announcement from Pfizer/BioNTech which showed their large-scale trials of the vaccine was 90% effective.

The high percentage of effectiveness is even more compelling given regulators said they would approve a vaccine if it were just 50% effective. 90% effectiveness puts it beyond expectations and gives the world a strong glimmer of hope in its fight against coronavirus.

The company also said there were no serious side-effects detected with the vaccine.

Dr Albert Bourla, Pfizer chairman and CEO said:

Today is a great day for science and humanity. The first set of results from our phase 3 Covid-19 vaccine trial provides the initial evidence of our vaccine’s ability to prevent Covid-19.

We are reaching this critical milestone in our vaccine development program at a time when the world needs it most with infection rates setting new records, hospitals nearing over-capacity and economies struggling to reopen

The phase 3 trials of the vaccine have involved more than 43,000 people. The findings of the trials will no doubt excite public health officials and politicians alike and puts a potential end of the Covid-19 pandemic on the horizon.

Pfizer has plans to manufacture 100 million of these vaccines this year and 1.3 billion by the end 2021.
